It all started in 2017 when Maarit Hara wrote a short play titled Go Down On Me Or Die in an effort to channel her anger for sleeping with a man multiple times (eight!) who wasn’t going down on her. Just straight to penetration. Every. Single. Time.
How did she let this happen? Why didn’t she say anything? Why didn’t this man want to go down on her? Did it remind him of his mom? Did his neck hurt? Did he try it once and not like it? Till this day, nobody knows because Maarit never asked him. Instead, she wrote a play.
Fast forward to early 2018: in the middle of Marina’s bartending shift at the late Videology Bar & Cinema in Williamsburg, we decided to turn Maarit’s one act into a full length play. After a few stagings and workshops the story kept evolving.
Then in December 2022, there was this perfect storm moment of opportunity, unemployment, and post lockdown creative rage. Our friend Simona Blat had just opened her incredible bookshop Black Spring Books in Brooklyn and she was generously willing to give us a space to film for free so we said fuck it - let’s make this happen.
We put together an all female team of writers and producers that helped us write and execute this series along with a passionate dedicated crew that did us huge favors (shout out PanUp Productions) and worked well below their rates.
Without going over the whole thing in painstaking detail the point is that this story just attracted everything it needed, like a magnet. People showed up. Resources showed up. Maybe all ideas are like that. They just need someone to say yes.
What started off as one person’s small piece that was personally cathartic ended up attracting over 80+ artists from New York, Finland, and Argentina, and even receiving a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts Women’s Fund. It has truly been a testament to the phrase “the more personal the more universal.”
Thank you so much for watching our series!! We hope you enjoy it.
